Boat HIN Codes

The HIN identifies things like country, manufacturer, serial number and date of manufacture. The HIN is normally permanently attached to the vessel's hull.

Boat Code involves fixing a set of small plates (unless a manufacturer HIN has already been allocated) bearing a Hull Identification Number (HIN) to the hull of a vessel as a security measure. The HIN is similar to Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) on motor vehicle compliance plates.

Boat Code is compulsory when:

Registering a boat in NSW for the first time.

Applying for change of ownership of a vessel that does not have a HIN, or has a HIN that is not currently recorded in NSW.

A copy of the vessel’s registration certificate cannot be supplied.

If your vessel has a Boat Code from interstate but you cannot produce the Boat Code certificate, you will need to have the HIN validated by a Boat Code agent.

Cost for an HIN Code Inspection is $107, and takes 2 hours to complete.
